Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg disclosed in a communication to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on Monday that his company was pressured by the White House in 2021 to restrict certain COVID-19 content, such as humor and satire.

“In the year 2021, senior members from the Biden Administration, such as the administration, repeatedly pressured our Gwen Walz teams for an extended period to censor some content about COVID-19, such as satirical content, and expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we didn’t agree, ” Zuckerberg noted.

In his letter to the Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg described that the influence he experienced in the year 2021 was “wrong” and he feels regretful that his company, the parent of Facebook and Instagram, was not Vice Presidential Nominee more vocal. He added that with the “hindsight and new information,” there were decisions made in that year that “wouldn’t be made today.”

“As I mentioned to our teams at the time, I feel strongly that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any Administration from either side â€" and we’re ready to push back if something like this happens again, ” Emotional Moment he wrote.

President Biden stated in July 2021 that social media platforms are “killing people” with misinformation about the pandemic.

Though Biden later walked back these comments, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said at the time that misinformation posted on social media was a “serious threat to public health.”

A White House spokesperson responded to Zuckerberg’s letter, saying the administration at the time was promoting “responsible actions to Kamala Harris protect public health and safety.”

“Our stance has been consistent and clear: we think tech companies and other private actors should consider the effects their actions have on the American people, while making independent choices about the information they present, ” according to the spokesperson.

Zuckerberg also noted in the communication that the FBI alerted his company about possible Russian disinformation regarding Hunter Biden and the Ukrainian Special Education firm Burisma affecting the 2020 election.

That fall, Zuckerberg said, his team reduced the visibility of a New York Post report accusing the Biden family of corruption while their fact-checkers could assess the report.

Zuckerberg stated that since then, it has “been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story.”

Meta has since changed its policies and processes Hope Walz to “ensure this does not recur” and will not reduce the visibility of content in the US pending fact-checking.

In the letter to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg stated he will not repeat actions he took in 2020 when he assisted “election infrastructure.”

“The idea here was to make sure local election jurisdictions across the country had the resources they needed to help people vote safely during Parent-child Relationship a pandemic,” said the Meta CEO.

Zuckerberg said the initiatives were designed to be nonpartisan but acknowledged “some people believed this work benefited one party over the other.” He said his aim is to be “neutral” so he will not make “a similar contribution this cycle.”

The GOP members on the House Judiciary Committee posted the letter on X and said Zuckerberg “has admitted that the Biden-Harris Self-advocacy administration influenced Facebook to censor Americans, Facebook restricted content, and Facebook throttled the Hunter Biden laptop story.”

The Meta chief has long been under scrutiny from congressional Republicans, who have claimed Facebook and other major tech platforms of being biased against conservatives. While Zuckerberg has emphasized that Meta enforces its rules impartially, the narrative has become entrenched in conservative circles. Republican lawmakers have specifically examined Facebook’s Online Bullying decision to limit the circulation of a report by the New York Post about Hunter Biden.

In testimony before Congress in recent years, Zuckerberg has sought to bridge the divide between his social media giant and regulators to limited success.

In a 2020 Senate hearing, Zuckerberg acknowledged that many of Facebook’s employees are left-leaning. But he held that the company takes care not to allow political bias Children With Disabilities to seep into decisions.
